Ping pong, aka table tennis, is enjoying a surge in popularity and professional tennis table player Tahl Leibovitz is here to help you jump on the bandwagon. In this video, he shares three tips that will help you win more matches.

My name is Tahl Leibovitz and I’m here at SPiN, New York. I am a professional table tennis player who has been competing internationally since 1995. I am here today to speak to you about the intermediate and beginner aspects of the Olympic sport of table tennis. I’m gonna talk right now about some table tennis tips that I’ve learned, you know, over my many years of competing internationally. One thing that’s really, really important in Table Tennis is you have to play the middle. The middle means you play where your opponent is. Wherever your opponent is you try to direct the ball directly at their middle, directly at your opponent, directly to them. Just like that. Okay, so if you guys are my opponent right now and I’m playing against you – whoops, that’s not supposed to happen, but I’m getting the ball directly to the middle, directly at you. See? Directly at you. Right at the middle. That’s the weakest point in Table Tennis. Very very important. The other thing you might want to do which helped me in servicing – a tips for serves, too – is that you might want to pause when you serve. So you sort of count, you know? You count to 3. You know, like “1, 2, 3.” And you go slow. Reason is this makes your opponent sort of, a little bit – you know, they’re waiting for your to serve but they haven’t got it yet and the timing is a little messed up. And the other tip that I can give you is don’t always try to kill you ball. You have to try to create the chance so that you can try to win the point. So it’s sort of like percentage. You have to figure, “How many balls can I make out of 10?” If you can make 60%, go for it. If you can make less, don’t. The main thing is to try to create a chance so that you can win the point. How does that work? Well, you might wanna do tactics. You might wanna serve short to the guy’s forehand, then go back out to his forehand. Just move the ball all the time. Try to change the pace of the ball; it’s very important. Sometimes push, sometimes put heavy spin, sometimes smash.
