The Elliptical Machine Or Treadmill – Why Not Use Both?
If you are like the millions of people around the world that have added ” getting in shape” as part of your New Years resolution, then according to the so-called experts out there, you have a choice to make. elliptical machine or treadmill. You can work out on one and not the other. Huh? I say why can’t you work out on both? Why can’t you use both? Both of these machines offer you the cardiovascular workout that you need to lose those unwanted pounds.
The elliptical machine does have a slight advantage. But it depends on the design of the particular elliptical that you use. If the elliptical trainer that you use has those handgrips ( the earlier models do not), then you have this slight advantage that I am talking about. Some of the fitness experts out there claim that if you use the elliptical machine WITHOUT the handgrips that you can actually strengthen your core muscles. This is because your core muscles (abdominals, pelvic and back muscles ) are forced into a state of constant tension.
You can benefit from using both machines in your workout. One day you can use the treadmill to finish your workout. The other day you can use the elliptical. The elliptical machines claim to fame is its low-impact design. The best time to use this low-impact advantage would probably be in the beginning of your new lifestyle change. (That’s right, I said lifestyle change. When you make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle which includes exercise and eating healthier, you ARE making a lifestyle change!)
In the beginning of your lifestyle change you will probably be heavier and therefore have a weaker core and lower body strength. You should use the elliptical for a couple of weeks until you feel you have the strength to use a treadmill. After a few weeks on a elliptical, you will have a stronger core ( the advantage from above), stronger leg muscles and a stronger cardiovascular system. All of these things will aid you when you decide to make the transition to a treadmill. After you make that transition, you can alternate between using both machines as you please.

Both of these machines give you the cardio workout that you need. Both of these machines can help you in your quest for a better and fitter you.
