Spenco Insoles For Cycling
Most people do not think of cycling as a sport that would need insoles for extra support. Most of the time you are sitting down, and there is little impact from the foot to travel up the leg into the trunk of the body causing us damage.
However, the reality is that even though cycling is a low impact sport, cushioning your feet is still beneficial to your body. As we exert force on the pedals of the bike, the pressure can push the foot out of alignment. The pedals are meant to be used with the toes and ball of the foot, but the majority of us use our arches to pump them round and round. This can cause extra stress in the arch area. Granted the arches do have a natural curve there but the pressure from the body on the pedals creates a larger curve producing stress on the foot. If sitting on the bike seat and pedaling produces stress, imagine how much greater it is when standing on the pedal. In addition of the stress of pedaling the bike, now you have your body weight added to it. Now add in the even greater stress of straining to make it up a steep incline or large hill.
Spenco insoles can help cushion and support the foot so that the curve of the arch is relatively unchanged. Additionally, the motion of the foot inside the shoe can cause friction to build up. Spenco Insoles can help absorb the friction from constant pedaling reducing the chances of injury such as blisters or calluses. Since it is in our nature to “baby” injuries such as blisters and calluses, we change our stride, or in the case of cycling, how we pedal. This can cause a balance issue in the body, making it easier for us to be injured. Using one half of the body more than the other can also increase the instance of repetitive use injuries on that side.
Two popular cycling insoles made by Spenco Medical are:
- Spenco Arch Cushions Insoles -a foam padded insole with cushioned arch support. This insole can be trimmed down to fit any tight-fitting cycling shoe.
- Spenco Polysorb FLOW Cool Insoles -a very slim cushioned insole with heat absorption qualities and designed to remove the heat from the foot.
So while cycling is a lower impact exercise, remember to still treat your feet to Spenco Insoles. The support and cushioning they receive could prevent more serious injuries later.
