Aren’t Ball Games Better Than Treadmill Workouts?
The other day, my son, Dan, asked me when we would be starting “tennis season.” It seems that Dan had a bit of spring fever and I couldn’t blame him. It seems I have spent an eternity watching TV and eating too much since our last tennis workouts. I had forgotten about the hot days of last summer when Dan and I needed cold drinks to keep going. And that got me thinking…
In addition to all the other reasons many of us are gaining weight and losing vitality is that we are no longer interested in or required to do enjoyable physical activities. Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait to get outside on the first warm day of spring? There were so many games to play and you loved nothing more than to try to beat your next door neighbor at H-O-R-S-E or bang a tennis ball off the wall at the park. The only question was would there be baseball workouts or basketball workouts today? Hmm… why not both? Even the girls who didn’t like sports were willing to play kickball. Kickball. Isn’t that a round ball sport?
What happened to that youthful vigor? It just seemed to get sucked out of us by all kinds of things. A desk job? Yes. School? Uh huh. How about experts suggesting the only way to get into good physical shape was to walk on a treadmill or lift weights for hours? Yup. “No pain, no gain”, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. Exercise can be fun again. You’ll know what I mean after you toss a ball back and forth with your son or hit some tennis balls with your wife. Go ahead, give it a try. Laugh at yourself. It won’t kill you.
The more I reflected on Dan’s question, the more I realized that folks today need to exercise more but they need a fun alternative to cycling class or nautilus workouts. To me, the answer was staring at me. Literally. The expression on my son’s face was a combination of eager anticipation and confidence as if he was saying,”This is the year I am going to finally beat my dad on the tennis court.”
I have to admit that after a long season of cold and snow, any activity outdoors would be welcome. But the competitive aspect of a game of tennis woke me from my winter slumber. That is the feeling so many of us desk prisoners should have as often as possible. The first session or two of tennis or golf workouts may remind us why we are not professional sports heroes but we don’t have to be heroes. All we really need to do is play games like we did when we were kids. Fun games. Competition against others and ourselves is healthy and makes us feel better when we achieve our goals. Improving our skills might even help us lose weight and grow closer to our family and friends. You just can’t get that from treadmill workouts…
