My name is Tahl Leibovitz and I’m here at SPiN, New York. I am a professional table tennis player who has been competing internationally since 1995. I am here today to speak to you about the intermediate and beginner aspects of the Olympic sport of table tennis. One of the big questions that a lot of players ask me… is there like, what equipment should I use? There’s like five-thousand different rackets and rubbers and sponge and different things. So I’m going to explain the equipment briefly here uh we have mainly these types of sponge which are sorta advanced sponge and they make like a lot of spin on the ball. The thicker the sponge is your actually going to get less spin, however your going to get more speed, so um we have a thicker sponge we tend to get more speed on the ball, and because there’s more speed on the ball your opponent has less time, now because there’s less time they feel the spin more, they don’t have time to react so if i was to spin the ball, like put spin on the ball with a rubber that is thicker its going to effect my opponent more because there going to have less time to react when I’m dealing with topspin. The thinner the rubber is the more control your going to have so we have rubbers that have long pips we have short pips and we have sponge of course I have a regular sponge racket. I would recommend trying to use a regular sponge racket. If you’re starting out you need to try and get uh a racket that would sorta be an all around racket and once you get better you can get an offensive racket, um paddle palace offers a lot of different rackets they have offensive they have everything i think its paddle… actually i’m wearing it paddlepalace.com and um so thats the main thing, the main thing is to be able to see you know really what style you wanna play. Do you wanna play defense? If your playing defense you need a thinner rubber. If you’re more aggressive you need the rubber to be a little bit thicker, but the main thing is the racket itself. This racket is offensive its a very fast racket its the most popular racket in china. It’s the clipper classic and with this one you can hit the ball really fast but some players prefer more control so in conclusion you have to decide hey do I want more control? Do I want to attack more? Am I playing more defense? Am I playing all around? um so thats mainly what you want to try to do. With this racket I found i was able to still play an all around game and still attack strong, thats why I chose it.
