Purchasing a treadmill for home use can help save you health club membership fees and travel time to and from the gym. But in order to invest your dollars wisely, there are several things to consider prior to making a treadmill purchase.
The most expensive treadmill models on the market, brands like Nautilus, Landice and Life Fitness, give you a machine with well-built construction, a powerful motor (1.5 to 2.5 hp), and a lengthy warranty (usually 3 years) against problems or defects. Moderately priced brands such as Schwinn, Horizon Fitness and Trimline can give you good value for dollars expended. There are also bargain treadmills available from retailers such as Sears and Walmart. To find the most satisfying treadmill for you, ask yourself a few questions before deciding on a particular model and style.
Be sure that the treadmill will fit the space you have allocated for it, lengthwise and widthwise, enabling you to swing your arms comfortably as you work out. Do you need a treadmill that will fold up and be stored out of site when you are not using it? Does the treadmill you’re considering have wheels for easy portability? How heavy is the unit and can you handle moving or folding it without assistance?
Is the layout and position of the handle bar comfortable for you? If you lose your balance while on the machine, does the treadmill have a safety feature or wrist strap that will automatically shut down the belt movement? Make sure your unit has the ability to both incline and decline.
Does the treadmill have a built in heart rate monitor and is it accurate? Be sure that the treadmill has a belt that is long enough and wide enough so that your feet don’t constant hit the deck or you feel hemmed in during your workout. A good rule of thumb is that if you are taller than 5’5″, get a longer belt.
How much cushioning does the treadmill provide when you are walking and when you are running? Do you want a treadmill that is good for both walking and running?
Check to see what special features the unit’s console offers such as a fan. And be sure your unit is clearly readable and capable of going up to 10 mph.
